I posted this over on Mo's board, but if ya didn't see it, here it is: Saturday, August 4th, me and my 2 friends headed out on the Gypsy Blood for a trip out to the Resor. At 6 a.m., with 17 divers, 3 mates, 2 capts., we got underway and I went down to the bunks to try and get some sleep in. Tried was the operative word because with the way I was bouncing around in my bunk I figured it must've been pretty snotty out there. About 1.5hrs later, my 1 buddy came down and reported no white caps but still some 6'ers out there. I got up to look around and saw good 4'ers with some 6'ers rolling in. A little more than a 2hr run time we were at the Resor and Mike jumped in and had us tied in in no time at all. With the big Gypsy rocking good, guys started kitting up and jumping in. It was really hot getting ready, so as soon as possible I jumped in, followed by my 2 buddies. I followed the carolina rig, which started on the port side at the stern. Before I knew it the rig crossed the underside of the boat and I was on the starboard side almost on the surface because the line was floating. (Capt. any chance of adding some weights to the middle section of the rig to hold the line down so it won't float?) So, with some good current it took me a little over 5mins to get to the bottom at 128'. Viz on the way down was really crappy. Once on the bottom, it opened up to about 15' - 20' but dark. I struck up my light before I got to the bottom and once at depth I tied my reel around some junk and headed off. One of my other buddies tied his line off too and off we went. We were tied into the middle section of the Resor, so there wasn't any big structure, only low lying debris. Under the debris in crevices, right next to the debris, out in the sand, the scallops were everywhere you looked. My buddy flashed his light to me and gave me the lobster signal and pointed his light to where I went over reached around the opposite side and gave that lobster a goose. He just walked out of his hole and I grabbed him and threw him into my buddies bag. My 2 buddies time was up and they let me know they were going up. I followed some short time later with about a 23min deco obligation. Things went good until I hit my 15' stop where I had a 10min stop. At about 7mins in, I started to get the dry heaves (there had been some current and the line jerking up and down didn't help). Once up the ladder the capt. helped me out of my fins and I walked over to an empty spot and crashed my rig down. My buddy helped me quick out of my rig and I ran to the stern to feed some fish. Once that was out of the way I felt fine, except extremely tired. My 2 buddies (1 sleeping already) felt the same way and we scrubbed dive #2. When I got home and was rinsing off my gear, I noticed that I lost my brand new strobe. If anyone goes out to the Resor and finds an Orange strobe with my name on it and you have a good conscience, please return it. There should also be a fin on the bottom, from another guy and the Capt. lost his backup light as well. Anyway, that's how my 1st trip to the Resor went. I was hoping for better seas and better vis, but it was what it was. Better luck to the Ol Salty next week! On another note, I was able to get my 40cuft topped off at Elite. I charged it up at about 90', while waiting for some others to get up the line. At my 30' stop, I purged the reg briefly and noticed that what came out looked white and frothy, something like alka seltzer. I purged again and it looked fine. Any ideas or anyone ever have something like this happen before? I had 80% in it, btw. |

Nice report. I feel for you when I imagine the dry heave feeling underwater. I did this wreck twice on the Seeker several years ago, and remember tossing chow through my reg. on the safety stop. The Resor is a super wreck with lots and lots to see. The viz. is usually better, being so far ofshore. Last time while I was on the line, a huge school of tuna went by us, the water was blue, and viz. was at least 50'-60'. _________________ See my online dive log at www.mikesdivelog.blogspot.com or check out the new NJDive website. |

Sorry to hear about the rough trip. We went out this time last year in 2-3 and 50 ft of vis. It was a great trip! Here's the report http://www.wreckvalley.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2087 As far as the white foam, I've seen it when the reg is charged at depth. It means water got into the reg. Either the first stage, or back thru the second stage. When purged the high pressure water coming out of the second stage causes the foam. It's just like spraying a garden hose in a bucket of water. I'd check your first stage filter, and you might want to have it serviced. My instructor taught us to charge the reg on the surface, then turn it off once you hit bottom. That way you can not breath off it by accident, it will not leak out, but it should prevent water from entering the second stage. I hope you can get to the wreck in better conditions, because it is a great wreck. Lots to see. Edit: Damn I wish I could spell. I still had a good trip and the dive itself was great. But after reading reports like yours and others who had 30' - 60' vis, I was ready and excited for the same thing. On the plus side, 15' - 20' vis is nothing to bitch about. After all, I've been out there where I could barely see my gauge in front of my face I took your suggestion and broke apart the 1st stage and sure enough saw water. I tasted it and darned if it wasn't salt. Your explaination was excellent. Thanks for your help! |
